On this particular day the Okinawa Budokan was closed because of the impending category 4 (winds 130–156 mph) Typhoon, Danas, that hit the island the following day. So we jumped into a convoy of taxis and headed north to the East Coast of Okinawa and the dojo of Zenshu Toyama Sensei in Awase. Toyama Sensei was a senior student of Toguchi Sensei who studied with Chojun Miyagi Sensei and Seko Higa Sensei and his very nice dojo is on the beach in Awase from where we could clearly see the approaching storm out on the ocean. By the time we got back to Naha that evening after a really great day training with Toyama Sensei and his son and daughter, the wind was already blowing at around 80 mph and the rain was coming in off the ocean at about 10º from the horizontal. By the next day the sustained wind speed was around 150 mph with gusts up to 170. Welcome to Okinawa!
